Earnings Deluge Continue Unabated
(RTTNews) - The U.S. reporting season is progressing along, with all but eight of the Dow components having already released their results. Corporate profits continue to show that companies benefited largely from cost-cutting. Advance second quarter GDP estimate released last week showed that economic activity increased at a slightly slower than expected pace in the period. However, the report revealed business capital spending remained strong, boding well for earnings. That said consumer spending is yet to pick up and the sustainability of the economic recovery underway hinges primarily on how spending pans out over the next couple of quarters. The upcoming week will witness earnings from American International Group, Archer Daniels Midland, Kraft Foods, Loews, MasterCard, Pfizer, Pitney Bowes, Time Warner and many other companies along with a slew of economic data, including those on July employment, national manufacturing, personal spending, and pending home sales. August 02 Monday, before the bell, the maker of Botox injection, Allergan Inc. (AGN) is expected to report second-quarter earnings. Analysts are looking for earnings of $0.81 per share on revenues of $1.20 billion, while the company expects non-GAAP earnings per share of $0.79 - $0.81, on net sales between $1.190 billion and $1.230 billion. In the comparable period last year, the group reported $0.75 per share on revenues of $1.13 billion. CNA Financial Corp. (CNA), the 90% holding company of Loews Corp. (L), is due to announce second-quarter numbers before the bell,Monday. Analysts expect earnings of $0.69 per share, on revenues of $1.92 billion. In the year-earlier quarter, the company earned $1.14 per share on revenues of $2.01 billion. Private Medicare plans provider Humana Inc. (HUM) expects to post second-quarter earnings per share of $1.65 to $1.70, while Wall Street consensus is for $1.63 per share, on revenues of $8.61 billion.
